Feb. 28, 2010 PTQ Puerto Rico event review from David Soule.

Before you all get to read David’s event review, I want to thank all the players who came out to play.  I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout of 37, esp. with the chaos created with the Tsunami warning.  I know that the Tsunami prevented a few players from competing for various reasons.  I knew of a few players flying in from outer islands and others who requested off from work to attend.  I try to never move big events because of this.

Special thanks to Jeff Lee for judging and running such a smooth event.  I must say that the Wizards solid black judge’s shirt looks very smooth on you.  Keith and I have much appreciation for all your hard work and effort.

Lastly, I have some housekeeping to do.  Jeff likes to post prize forecasts up front.  I like to figure out prizes, once I see standings to make sure that all players with the same record get something.  There were 3 players that achieved 3 wins and did not receive prizes,  Andrew Tyler, Scott Lopez and Mike Ching.  Please see or contact me and I will have something for you.

Here is a review of the event by David Soule:

The Magic the Gathering Pro Tour Qualifier on Sunday February 28th had a good turnout.  There were a total of 37 players attending.  Looking through the decklists, diversity was the name of the game.  There were only a few archetypes that multiple people ran. Things ranged from many different combo-oriented decks to disruptive agressive decks to some special home brewed decks.  It took six rounds of play to narrow it down to the top 8.

The top 8 standings were:
1) Sean Pottenger
2) Alex Ahia
3) Jason Galut
4) Colin Hong
5) Dominic Roos
6) Dane Young
7) Kristopher Lohman
8) Shawn Kimura

In the quarterfinals Dominic beat out Colin Hong with the combo-stopping Chalice of the Void.  Dane defeated Jason in a grueling 3-game match.  Sean Pottenger took a fairly quick match win against the Boros fast Shawn Kimura.  Lastly, Kristopher Lohman and his Bant deck managed to get past Alex Ahia and his elves combo deck.  In the semifinals, Dominic Roos got ousted again in his rematch against Sean Pottenger, all while Dane Young pulled out the match win against Kristopher Lohman in 3 games.  Dane conceded to Sean in the finals, making Sean Pottenger our San Juan Pro Tour Qualifier winner! Congratulations to all players for participating!
